I am planning to write a series of articles on common misconceptions regarding tanks. Tell me if you want to see more. (This article is related to my project, so please point out suggestions)
\n<\/b>\u6211\u6253\u7b97\u5199\u4e00\u7cfb\u5217\u7684\u5173\u4e8e\u5766\u514b\u7684\u5e38\u89c1\u8bef\u89e3\u7684\u6587\u7ae0\u3002\u5982\u679c\u8fd8\u60f3\u770b\u5230\u66f4\u591a\u6587\u7ae0\u7684\u8bdd\u8bf7\u8ddf\u6211\u8bf4\uff08\u8fd9\u7bc7\u6587\u7ae0\u548c\u6211\u7684\u8bfe\u9898\u6709\u5173\u7cfb\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u8bf7\u63d0\u4f9b\u5404\u79cd\u610f\u89c1\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n

The balance between the power of the main gun (penetration and damage caused) and the effective armor of tanks has been almost in equilibrium for the most part of tank development history. It was after World War II, when the introduction of anti-tank missiles caused the equilibrium to shift towards the offensive. However, obviously armor cannot lag behind the offensive weapons for a long time, so soon composite armor was developed to return the balance. Of course the introduction of ERA and depleted Uranium armor happened to add further shifts in the balance. So I want to resolve some common misconceptions regarding armor and ammunition. (This time round is going to be ammo\/gun, maybe armor next time if this article is welcomed).
\n\u5766\u514b\u7684\u53d1\u5c55\u5386\u53f2\u4e0a\uff0c\u4e3b\u70ae\u7684\u706b\u529b\uff08\u51fb\u7a7f\u80fd\u529b\u4e0e\u53ef\u9020\u6210\u7684\u4f24\u5bb3\uff09\u4e0e\u5766\u514b\u7684\u9632\u62a4\u53ef\u9760\u6027\u4e00\u76f4\u90fd\u662f\u5904\u5728\u4e00\u4e2a\u5e73\u8861\u7684\u4f4d\u7f6e\u4e0a\u7684\u3002\u4e8c\u6218\u540e\uff0c\u53cd\u5766\u514b\u5bfc\u5f39\u7684\u51fa\u73b0\u4f7f\u5f97\u8fd9\u4e2a\u5929\u5e73\u5f00\u59cb\u5411\u706b\u529b\u4e00\u6d4b\u503e\u659c\u3002\u7136\u800c\u9632\u62a4\u80fd\u529b\u4e0d\u80fd\u957f\u65f6\u95f4\u7684\u843d\u540e\u4e8e\u8fdb\u653b\u6027\u6b66\u5668\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u590d\u5408\u5f0f\u88c5\u7532\u5c31\u88ab\u53d1\u660e\u4e86\u51fa\u6765\uff0c\u4ee5\u5e73\u8861\u8fdb\u653b\u4e0e\u9632\u5b88\u4e4b\u95f4\u7684\u5929\u5e73\u3002\u5f53\u7136\u4e86\uff0c\u7531\u4e8e\u7206\u53cd\u548c\u8d2b\u94c0\u88c5\u7532\u7684\u51fa\u73b0\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e2a\u5929\u5e73\u53c8\u4e00\u6b21\u7684\u51fa\u73b0\u4e86\u503e\u659c\u3002\uff08\u8fd9\u6b21\u6587\u7ae0\u7684\u4e3b\u9898\u662f\u4e3b\u70ae\/\u5f39\u836f\uff0c\u5982\u679c\u6587\u7ae0\u53cd\u54cd\u4e0d\u9519\u7684\u8bdd\uff0c\u4e0b\u6b21\u4e5f\u8bb8\u53ef\u80fd\u4f1a\u8bb2\u8bb2\u88c5\u7532\uff09<\/span><\/p>\n

What do you do to increase penetration? Well, simple, make the caliber bigger and the gun longer! This is true but it depends on the type of ammo. For example, an Indian Army\u2019s T-90S is not going to have the same penetration as Russia\u2019s newest T-90AM<\/b> although the guns are identical, the shells can make a significant difference. We know that to increase momentum, we have to increase either the mass of the projectile or the velocity, either way we have to increase ammo size or barrel length. The good example is probably the long 8.8cm and the short 8.8cm gun, the longer the barrel, the greater the accuracy and the greater the velocity (in the case of the 8.8cm gun, a longer ammunition is used to pack more punch). However, there is a certain limit to how long the gun can be before it becomes impractical, so engineers after WW2 introduced smooth-bore guns. Smooth-bore is when the barrel no longer has grooves, hence opposite of rifled guns.
\n\u90a3\u8981\u600e\u4e48\u6837\u624d\u80fd\u63d0\u9ad8\u7a7f\u6df1\u5462\uff1f\u5176\u5b9e\u5f88\u7b80\u5355\uff0c\u628a\u53e3\u5f84\u5f04\u5927\uff0c\u70ae\u7ba1\u5f04\u957f\u5c31\u53ef\u4ee5\u4e86\uff01\u8fd9\u70b9\u56fa\u7136\u6ca1\u9519\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u8fd8\u662f\u8981\u53d6\u51b3\u4e8e\u5f39\u836f\u7684\u79cd\u7c7b\u3002\u4e3e\u4e2a\u6817\u5b50\uff0c\u5370\u5ea6\u7684T-90S\u548c\u4fc4\u7f57\u65af\u7684\u6700\u65b0\u5f0f\u7684T-90AM\u7684\u7a7f\u6df1\u5c31\u80af\u5b9a\u4e0d\u4e00\u6837\uff0c\u5c3d\u7ba1\u4e3b\u70ae\u4e00\u6837\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u5f39\u836f\u5e26\u6765\u7684\u5dee\u8ddd\u662f\u975e\u5e38\u5de8\u5927\u7684\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u77e5\u9053\uff0c\u60f3\u8981\u589e\u52a0\u52a8\u80fd\u7684\u8bdd\uff0c\u8981\u4e48\u53bb\u589e\u52a0\u88ab\u6295\u5c04\u7684\u7269\u4f53\u7684\u8d28\u91cf\uff0c\u6216\u8005\u662f\u901f\u5ea6\u3002\u65e0\u8bba\u600e\u4e48\u6837\u90fd\u8981\u589e\u52a0\u70ae\u5f39\u7684\u5c3a\u5bf8\uff0c\u6216\u8005\u662f\u628a\u70ae\u7ba1\u52a0\u957f\u3002\u8fd9\u91cc\u518d\u4e3e\u4e00\u4e2a\u957f8.8cm\u70ae\u548c\u77ed8.8cm\u70ae\u7684\u6817\u5b50\uff0c\u70ae\u7ba1\u8d8a\u957f\uff0c\u7cbe\u5ea6\u8d8a\u9ad8\uff0c\u901f\u5ea6\u4e5f\u5c31\u8d8a\u9ad8\uff08\u57288.8cm\u70ae\u8fd9\u4e2a\u6817\u5b50\u5f53\u4e2d\uff0c\u4ed6\u4eec\u9009\u62e9\u4e86\u589e\u52a0\u70ae\u5f39\u7684\u957f\u5ea6\u4ee5\u589e\u52a0\u6740\u4f24\u529b\uff09\u3002\u7136\u800c\u70ae\u7ba1\u7684\u957f\u5ea6\u4e5f\u662f\u6709\u9650\u5236\u7684\uff0c\u4e0d\u7136\u5c31\u592a\u4e0d\u8fc7\u73b0\u5b9e\u4e86\u3002\u6240\u4ee5\u4e8c\u6218\u540e\u7684\u5de5\u7a0b\u5e08\u4eec\u505a\u51fa\u4e86\u6ed1\u819b\u70ae\u3002\u6ed1\u819b\u70ae\u548c\u7ebf\u819b\u70ae\u622a\u7136\u76f8\u53cd\uff0c\u819b\u7ebf\u5f7b\u5e95\u7684\u53d6\u6d88\u4e86\u3002<\/span><\/p>\n

This means there is less friction, hence the shells will exit the barrel at a greater velocity than rifled guns.
\n\u8fd9\u5c31\u610f\u5473\u7740\u6469\u64e6\u529b\u66f4\u4f4e\uff0c\u8fd9\u6837\u70ae\u5f39\u5728\u51fa\u819b\u7684\u65f6\u5019\u6bd4\u4f7f\u7528\u7ebf\u819b\u70ae\u80fd\u83b7\u5f97\u66f4\u5927\u7684\u901f\u5ea6\u3002<\/span><\/p>\n

Difficulties with smooth-bore guns are that they lose accuracy as the whole point of rifled guns is to make the shell spin. It works just like throwing a rugby ball or American football, you\u2019ve got to spin it to increase stability and accuracy. The solution to that is to add fins on the shells. Clever isn\u2019t it?
\n\u7136\u800c\u6ed1\u819b\u70ae\u7684\u56f0\u96be\u5728\u4e8e\u7cbe\u51c6\u5ea6\u7684\u4e0b\u964d\uff0c\u56e0\u4e3a\u7ebf\u819b\u70ae\u7684\u672c\u610f\u5c31\u662f\u8ba9\u70ae\u5f39\u65cb\u8f6c\u8d77\u6765\u3002\u5c31\u50cf\u5728\u4e22\u6a44\u6984\u7403\u4e00\u6837\uff0c\u603b\u5f97\u8ba9\u7403\u65cb\u8f6c\u8d77\u6765\u624d\u80fd\u63d0\u9ad8\u5b83\u7684\u7a33\u5b9a\u6027\u548c\u7cbe\u51c6\u5ea6\u3002\u5bf9\u6b64\u7684\u89e3\u51b3\u529e\u6cd5\u5219\u662f\u5728\u70ae\u5f39\u4e0a\u52a0\u4e0a\u4e86\u5f39\u7ffc\u4f7f\u4e4b\u7a33\u5b9a\u3002\u5f88\u806a\u660e\u5427\uff1f<\/span><\/p>\n

105mm Gun
\n<\/b>105mm\u7684\u4e3b\u70ae<\/strong><\/p>\n

Classic 105mm guns mounted on M60 or M1 (early variant) had a muzzle velocity of 1501m\/s on its kinetic rounds weighing at 5.8kg. The kinetic energy is 6.55 Mega Joules.
\nLeopard 2\u2019s Rh120 120mm smooth-bore gun has a muzzle velocity of 1650m\/s and weighs 7.1kg, kinetic energy is 10 mega Joules. The kinetic energy of the 120mm gun is about 50% more than the 105 gun. The breech pressure of the 120mm gun is 6.3*10^8 Pa which is 6300 times the atmospheric pressure which is about 50% more than the 105mm gun.\u00a0 (Note to calculate penetration we have to convert the values to the standard RHA)
\n\u5728M60\u6216\u8005M1\uff08\u65e9\u671f\u578b\u53f7\uff09\u4e0a\u88c5\u7684\u59cb\u7956\u7248105mm\u70ae\u5728\u4f7f\u7528\u5b83\u76845.8\u516c\u65a4\u52a8\u80fd\u5f39\u65f6\u7684\u70ae\u53e3\u521d\u901f\u662f1501m\/s\uff0c\u800c\u70ae\u5f39\u7684\u52a8\u80fd\u662f6.55\u767e\u4e07\u7126\u8033\u3002\u8c79II\u7684\u83b1\u8335\u91d1\u5c5e120mm\u6ed1\u819b\u70ae\u5728\u4f7f\u75287.1\u516c\u65a4\u7684\u52a8\u80fd\u5f39\u65f6\u7684\u70ae\u53e3\u521d\u901f\u57281650m\/s\uff0c\u52a8\u80fd\u662f\u4e00\u5343\u4e07\u7126\u8033\u3002120mm\u70ae\u7684\u52a8\u80fd\u5927\u7ea6\u6bd41.5mm\u70ae\u8981\u591a\u51fa\u4e00\u534a\u5de6\u53f3\u3002\u800c120mm\u7684\u819b\u5e95\u538b\u529b\u662f6.3*10^8\u5e15\uff0c\u4e5f\u5c31\u662f\u6807\u51c6\u5927\u6c14\u538b\u76846300\u500d\uff0c\u540c\u6837\u4e5f\u6bd4105mm\u70ae\u591a\u51fa\u4e00\u534a\u5de6\u53f3\u3002\uff08\u8981\u8ba1\u7b97\u7a7f\u6df1\u7684\u8bdd\u8981\u628a\u6240\u6709\u6570\u636e\u90fd\u8f6c\u6362\u6210\u80fd\u51fb\u7a7f\u591a\u5c11\u539a\u5ea6\u7684\u8f67\u5236\u5747\u8d28\u88c5\u7532\u624d\u884c\uff09

Imagine the kinetic round trying to rip through the thick armour of a modern main battle tank with composite armour. The material in the armour is not all metallic, there are some materials inside it that can really absorb the kinetic energy effectively. After penetration, remember the shell still has to have enough energy to kill the crew etc. Not as easy as you might think it would be.
\n\u60f3\u8c61\u4e00\u4e0b\u4e00\u679a\u6b63\u5728\u8bd5\u56fe\u7a7f\u900f\u4f7f\u7528\u4e86\u590d\u5408\u88c5\u7532\u7684\u73b0\u4ee3\u4e3b\u6218\u5766\u514b\u7684\u52a8\u80fd\u5f39\u3002\u590d\u5408\u88c5\u7532\u7684\u6750\u8d28\u5e76\u4e0d\u662f\u5168\u90fd\u662f\u91d1\u5c5e\uff0c\u5728\u88c5\u7532\u5185\u90e8\u6709\u4e00\u4e9b\u53ef\u4ee5\u5f88\u597d\u7684\u5438\u6536\u52a8\u80fd\u7684\u6750\u6599\u3002\u5728\u51fb\u7a7f\u88c5\u7532\u4e4b\u540e\uff0c\u8bf7\u8bb0\u4f4f\u8fd9\u679a\u70ae\u5f39\u4f9d\u7136\u9700\u8981\u7559\u6709\u8db3\u591f\u7684\u52a8\u80fd\u6765\u51fb\u6740\u4e58\u5458\u4ec0\u4e48\u7684\u3002\u5176\u5b9e\u548c\u60f3\u8c61\u7684\u4e0d\u4e00\u6837\uff0c\u4e00\u70b9\u90fd\u4e0d\u7b80\u5355\u3002<\/span><\/p>\n

Be careful tank addicts, penetration values from different nations are done under different conditions so the result may be misleading. Don\u2019t just compare raw data, it can mislead you.<\/b>

Most modern Main Battle tanks have a RHA value of 600-700mm so 120mm rounds currently will require quite ideal situations to penetrate tanks. Western designer\u2019s solutions are generally to increase length of barrel and improve ammo types, but the potential in the 120mm guns can only go so far (so not room for improvement anymore).
\n\u5927\u90e8\u5206\u4e3b\u6218\u5766\u514b\u7684\u88c5\u7532\u5728\u6362\u7b97\u6210\u8f67\u5236\u5747\u8d28\u88c5\u7532\u7684\u539a\u5ea6\u540e\u4e00\u822c\u90fd\u6709600~700mm\u7684\u503c\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5120mm\u7684\u70ae\u5f39\u662f\u9700\u8981\u5728\u5f88\u7406\u60f3\u7684\u60c5\u51b5\u4e0b\u624d\u80fd\u591f\u51fb\u7a7f\u5766\u514b\u7684\u3002\u897f\u65b9\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5e08\u7684\u89e3\u51b3\u529e\u6cd5\u4e00\u822c\u90fd\u662f\u52a0\u957f\u70ae\u7ba1\u4ee5\u53ca\u5bf9\u5f39\u836f\u79cd\u7c7b\u8fdb\u884c\u6539\u826f\uff0c\u4f46\u662f120mm\u70ae\u7684\u6f5c\u529b\u53ea\u6709\u8fd9\u70b9\u4e86\uff08\u6ca1\u6709\u4ec0\u4e48\u53ef\u4ee5\u63d0\u5347\u7684\u7a7a\u95f4\u4e86\uff09<\/span><\/p>\n

Most people know that Western countries (NATO) tend to use 120mm guns and Soviet (Russian\/Chinese) guns are 125mm. Historically, Americans developed a 90mm, the Soviets then designed the 100mm, then NATO used 105mm which led to the Soviets to design a 115mm and so on until the recent 125mm. Almost every Soviet design wants to remain 5mm or 10mm greater than that of the NATO guns of the same period.
\n\u5927\u591a\u6570\u4eba\u90fd\u77e5\u9053\uff0c\u897f\u65b9\u56fd\u5bb6\uff08NATO\uff09\u503e\u5411\u4e8e\u4f7f\u7528120mm\u70ae\uff0c\u800c\u82cf\u8054\uff08\u4fc4\u7f57\u65af\/\u4e2d\u56fd\uff09\u7684\u70ae\u90fd\u662f125mm\u7684\u3002\u53f2\u5b9e\u89d2\u5ea6\u4e0a\u6765\u8bf4\uff0c\u7f8e\u56fd\u4eba\u5f00\u53d1\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a90mm\uff0c\u4e4b\u540e\u82cf\u8054\u5f04\u51fa\u4e86100mm\uff0c\u7136\u540eNATO\u4f7f\u7528\u4e86105mm\u70ae\uff0c\u4f7f\u5f97\u82cf\u8054\u4eba\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4e86115mm\u76f4\u5230\u6700\u8fd1\u7684125mm\u3002\u57fa\u672c\u4e0a\u6bcf\u4e2a\u82cf\u8054\u70ae\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u90fd\u60f3\u8981\u6bd4\u540c\u65f6\u671f\u7684NATO\u70ae\u7684\u53e3\u5f84\u5927\u4e2a5mm\u6216\u800510mm<\/span><\/p>\n

You would think that power is greater with bigger guns because as the dimensions increase, more gunpowder can be filled. Not always the case, let me tell you why.

    This tank designer was in his 90s when he finished the Type 99 project (he only had one arm due to the Korean War). He died recently and received many awards for his outstanding courage to take up a new project as head designer at the age of 80. I want to emphasize that the gun on the Armada is supposedly better than the 125mm on the T-90 so you take that into perspective as well. Just like the fact that the Norinco (Chinese) 125mm on the Type 99 is superior to the T-90\u2019s gun although the same caliber does not mean same power.

    Now, let\u2019s talk about 140mm gun. 20 or 30 years ago, Swiss and German engineers began designing the 140mm guns which was fitted on leopard 2 for firing tests. It proved that 140mm was viable on main battle tanks so British Royal Ordnance Nottingham also produced a 140mm for testing. But due to relaxation since there will be no urgent need to fit 140mm gun for a new major ground based war, it is not going to be implemented soon.

    2. Solve recoil issues, the recoil of 120mm firing APFSDS has a force of equivalent 40-50 tons. 140mm has over 60 tons.

    3. Reduce the burning caused by friction in the barrel. This is required to increase the life span of the gun. No point having a gun that requires replacement every few hundred rounds

If you ask me if depleted uranium should be allowed, I just say that it depends on the results gathered if the radiation is life threateningly dangerous or not.
